Our remote Alaska lodges can be reached by floatplane, helicopter or boat. Most guests land in Anchorage upon arriving in Alaska and then travel to reach Winterlake Lodge or Tutka Bay Lodge.
About Within the Wild Alaska Adventure Company
To be part of the Within the Wild team, you’ll need to demonstrate your ability to provide an exceptional level of hospitality and selfless customer service - and, you must have a true passion for the environment. Guides are required to be WFR certified and have Alaska experience. Chefs should be well advanced in their ability to be creative and lead a team. All members of our team need to be high achievers and have the ability to be laser-focused on the mission of our work.

The Employee Experience
We ask that all employees are willing to be fully immersed in the Alaska lodge lifestyle and culture. This requires you to be dedicated to the values and mission of our lodge life. With one day off per week, it is possible to leave the lodge, explore our vast neighborhood or relax but, remember, our lodges operate during an intense seasonal Alaska summer that requires commitment and ability to endure a 14-20 week contract. All lodge-based employees are offered a monthly salary that’s calculated into an hourly wage in compliance with the State of Alaska’s wage and hour requirements to include a 10 or 12-hour workday. We have plenty of fun and employees leave with new friends and lifelong memories.
For those who have never lived in a rustic environment before, camp life can be a transition. Alaska is a wild place and living in remote Alaska requires intention in everyday actions. Some employees are required to spend extended time on remote float trips and out camp adventures including our glacier dog mushing camp. As with any small community, the lodges require rules and regulations so that we can remain organized and professional. An employee manual is located at each lodge site.

We also need a committed team member who can fully focus on the lodge and work at hand.
All employees who begin the season with us will undergo a complete orientation. Employees that join us into the season will be given an orientation by their direct supervisor. We try to make lodge life as comfortable, easy-going, and fun as we can. Some rules are strict and will be absolutely enforced, such as with our no-drug policies. We do not center our social activities on alcohol. IF YOU ARE A HEAVY ALCOHOL CONSUMER, PLEASE DON'T APPLY. We enjoy challenging ourselves both mentally and physically to explore new areas of the backcountry and to learn new skills. We are passionate collectors of music and particularly enjoy bluegrass. We create off-time social opportunities. Some individual and team sports activities, such as volleyball have been popular. Employees take meals together at regularly scheduled times. The lodge chefs prepare food for the staff as well as the guests.
It is very important that employees remain with us for the duration of their contracted period, as it is critical to our success to employ a full staff for the entire season. If you are a student and need to return to school before the season ends, or you find that you may have other obligations, we request that you discuss them prior to accepting a position with us. We desire to say farewell and send our seasonal employees into the autumn season with good memories and the satisfaction of knowing that they have fulfilled their commitment and have pride in a job well done.
Room and Board
We provide room & board to all lodge-based employees as part of the compensation package. We have some private accommodations and some shared accommodations. We have shared shower house and all lodge-based employees use outhouses in the spirit of water conservation. We offer interesting and nutritious meals to all lodge employees and one free meal a day for café employees.

Getting Here and Getting Around
We sometimes offer air travel to Alaska as part of the compensation package. Otherwise, we provide transportation from Anchorage or Homer to the lodges. The lodges are in remote Alaska so no personal transportation is necessary. We recommend that La Baleine café employees have their own car or bicycle.
Winterlake Lodge: kayak, hike, sleep/relax, garden, play with the sled dog puppies, photography, and swimming.
Tutka Bay Lodge: long exploratory kayaks, camp, mountain bike to neighboring villages, hike, swim, take a water taxi to the town of Homer, sleep in hammocks in the woods.
