Camp Airy is a single-gender camp for boys, located in Thurmont, MD. Every summer, we host campers ages 7-17, who participate in a diverse range of activities, including sports, extreme sports, arts, music, drama, swimming, and a wide variety of outdoor activities. Camp staff members describe their jobs as challenging, yet extremely rewarding. They get to meet people from all over the world, and make a huge positive impact on the lives of the campers they work with.

The Outdoors Department Head (DH) oversees a safe, engaging, and fun environment in which campers participate in challenging outdoor activities, develop their confidence personally and as part of a team, and learn about many aspects of outdoor adventure to instill an appreciation of the outdoors.

The Outdoors DH will coordinate and supervise up to 20 outdoor staff members to lead, and/or assist in leading; overnight camping trips, mountain biking programs, ropes course programs, team building exercises, outdoor cooking, fishing, wilderness survival, fire building, navigation, and much more. Outdoors counselors arrive at camp 2 weeks early, to train for leading these activities, and to bond as a team. The Outdoors DH will assist in this training and team bonding.

The main responsibilities of the Outdoors DH are:

  • Ensuring camper supervision and safety at all times
  • Assisting to develop an outdoors curriculum for different age groups and timeframes
  • Scheduling Outdoors Counselors to lead in the delivery of a wide range of outdoor adventure-based pursuits.
  • Collaborating with outdoors staff to ensure they are providing appropriate and high quality programming
  • Continual evaluation of Outdoors staff
  • Maintaining and caring for outdoors equipment
  • Serving as role model to all campers and staff, with a positive attitude, good work ethic, and appropriate behavior

All camp staff live on site, at our beautiful camp, for the duration of the position (June 13-August 14). Room and board are provided. Staff receive 5 days and 5 nights off, plus a mid-summer weekend off. It is our goal that our staff time off will be off campus in summer 2022, subject to change based on COVID-19 outlook.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience leading and training others in outdoors adventure pursuits.
  • Experience in assessing risks, developing and ensuring protocols for the safety of campers and staff.
